The Iveragh Peninsula

The Iveragh Peninsula, often referred to as the 'Ring of Kerry',is one of Ireland's most dramatic and beautiful landscapes.

The Iveragh Peninsula(Irish:Ubh Rthach) is located inCounty KerryinIreland. It is the largest peninsula in southwestern Ireland. A mountain range, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, lies in the centre of the peninsula.Carrauntoohil, its highest mountain, is also the highest peak in Ireland.

Towns on the peninsula include Killorglin,Cahersiveen,Ballinskelligs,Portmagee,Waterville,Caherdaniel,Sneem and Kenmare.

Waterville Golf Links one of the top 100 golf clubs in the world is located beside Waterville town.

The Ring of Kerry, a popular tourist trail, circles the coastlines beginning and ending atKillarney, just east of the peninsula. To the south of the Ring is the Skellig Ring, which leaves N70 and the ring of Kerry at the R566 and circles through Portmagee through the Glen home to the now world famous Skellig Chocolate Factory, on to the pre famine village of Cill Rialaig and then through Ballinskelligs onto the R567 and then rejoins the N70 to continue along the Ring of Kerry.

Valentia Island lies off the northwestern tip of the peninsula off the Skellig Ring. It is connected with the peninsula by a bridge atPortmageevillage, but it can also be reached by ferry crossing between Renard Point on the mainland and Knightstown on the island. This is the largest Island off the coast of Ireland which boasts a slate quarry which provided the slates for the English houses of Parliament and many other buildings throughout Ireland. Also on Valentia are the 400-million-year-old fossilised tetrapod tracks. It was also from Valentia in that a cable was laid across the floor of the Atlantic from Telegraph Field, Foilhommerum Bay,Valentia Island in western Ireland to Heart's Content in eastern Newfoundland. The first communications occurred August 16, 1858, reducing the communication time between North America and Europefrom ten days – the time it took to deliver a message by ship – to only 17 hours. Transatlantic telegraph cables have been replaced by transatlantic telecommunications cables.

The Skellig Islands lie about 12 kilometres (7.5statute miles or 6.4nautical miles) off the west coast and are known for their monastic buildings and bird life. In recent years Star Wars movies have been filmed there. The Skellig Islands, an internationally renowned bird sanctuary, boasta wonderful array of birdlife.

Breeds such as the Guillemot, theKitewake and the unmistakable Puffin call the Skellig Islands home during the summer months. This is especially true for the Gannet, as over 20,000 pairs migrate to Little Skellig between May and September every year, making it the second largest Gannet sanctuary in the world.

Kerry Geopark is a community initiative on the Iveragh Peninsula which aims to promote geotourism in this area of high geological importance. Some of the interest features are Kenmare Bay (a drowned river valley or ria), signs of past glaciation and volcanic activity.

Cloghanecarhan, a ringfort withoghamstone, is a National Monument.

Loher Cashel, a stone ringfort (caiseal) is located at the western edge of Iveragh.

Daniel O'Connell(Irish:Dnall Conaill; 6 August 1775– 15 May 1847) born and raised on Iveragh is often referred to as The Liberator or The Emancipator, was an Irish political leader in the first half of the 19th century. He campaigned for and secured Catholic emancipation—including the right for Catholics to sit in the Westminster Parliament, denied for over 100 years—and repeal of the Act of Union which combined Great Britain and Ireland.

Many famous sportsmen and women were born on the Iveragh Penninsula, Mick O’Connell, Mick O’Dwyer, Maurice Fitzgerald, all for Gaelic football, Jackie Healy Rea politicion, Christy Moriarty, Dominick Anthony Tom Lynch and John Joe Quirke of Handball fame, Sigerson Clifford(1913 – 1 January 1985) was an Irish poet, playwright and civil servant to name but a few born or raised on the Iveragh Penninsula.
